We are honoured to announce that the Honorary SIICA Members Alberto Mantovani and Giorgio Trinchieri have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
On April 30, 2024, the National Academy of Sciences has announced the election of 120 members and 24 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 2,617 and the total number of international members to 537. International members are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States.
Prof. Mantovani’s research activity has been focused on molecular mechanisms of innate immunity and inflammation, formulating new paradigms and identifying new molecules and functions. He is best known for his works in the roles of the immune system in the development of cancer: his research on tumor-associated macrophages (TAM, an acronym he coined) established inflammation as one of the root causes of cancer.

Dr. Trinchieri‘s research examines many aspects of the complex cross-talk between inflammation and cancer, including the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating the activity of certain classes of immune cells and how the environment around a tumor interacts with the immune system to suppress an immune response to the disease.
